School Exchange programme with Macleans College Aucland, NEWZEALAND

Mr Steve Lewis and Mr Dave Norris, senior teachers of Macleans College, Auckland, New Zealand had paid a visit to Vivekananda Mission School, Joka from 3rd November 2008 to 11th November 2008 in order to strike a common chord between the education system prevailing here and there. It has taken the VMS family one step closer to the conceptualization of the ‘global family’ work plan.

The teachers interacted with different sections of VMS faculty at different levels. They gave us a feedback of how they conduct their academic courses and co-curricular activities. Our teachers helped them have a clear idea about the working conditions prevailing in the Indian Educational scenario.

On 10th Nov’08 they visited the Ajanta slum and interacted with the students and parents. They were so touched and moved by the way Vivekananda Education Society, Kolkata has come up to help these needy children that they have been kind enough to sponsor the education of eight children from the slum for holistic development.

This exchange programme has opened up new vistas for Vivekananda Mission School and we can proudly say that we are truly global.

The visit was a major step towards a better understanding of future projects and work and towards experiencing the real context of the partner schools.

The ‘BOND’ was strengthened as the partners jointly applied for the Global Curriculum Project Grants. They discussed to focus on the topic ‘Water’ in order to get the students in both the schools thinking about the warp to deal with the scarcity of this precious resource.

So far the partnership has generated three major learning outcomes:-

• Enabled teachers and students to re-evaluate the educational approaches and develop mutually complementarily curricular projects by learning from their partner schools.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Ms. Keya Sinha
Principal
Vivekananda Mission School was founded in 1978 with an objective to nurture the perfection inherent in every young learner, in the way Swami Vivekananda, the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission, envisaged. Within twenty-eight years of its foundation, the school has grown from strength to strength to carve a niche for itself in the academic map of the state. The salient feature of the school that sets it apart from other institutions and makes it special is the personal touch in its grooming of the young mind. An eye for the all-round development of the child and quality service are the add-ons.

It is in this perspective that we took up the International School Awards project. Since the school lays stress on both curricular and co-curricular activities, this was not a difficult thing to do. During the planning period, care was taken to ensure that it got well integrated into the classroom and field activities. So there was no loss of teaching time.

The Project implementation saw a total involvement both on the part of the teacher as well as the taught. In fact the whole school participated with a lot of enthusiasm. The presentations of the pupils were assessed internally for different subjects. Moreover, the ISA opened a number of windows to the pupils. First of all it enabled them to know about the geographical, cultural and social backgrounds of the countries they involved in their project. This created a better understanding of the people beyond their own national borders. This is very important at a time when technology has brought the world within the periphery of our homes and has transformed it into a global village.

In order to work for the Project, the school had to be registered at the Global Gateway. This gave us the opportunity to find contacts with schools abroad. It is not that all the schools we contacted responded immediately and promptly. This we accepted as the teething – problems we need to face for any first-time activity. Some of the links that we made were developed through our own resources. In this context mention must be made of Mrs. Kusumika Chatterjee, an NRI, who is a part time teacher and IPE expert working in and around Coventry and Warwickshire, UK. It was mainly due to her that we had sustained links with Sydenham Primary School and Aldermoor Farm Junior School. It was at the invitation of Aldermoor Farm that I visited UK in June. I also received enough support from BCL, Kolkata in this respect. Through them I was able to get Oakland High School in the Tower Hamlets, London. The other schools I visited and got to know are Mount Grace High School in Leicestershire, Kingsbury Primary School, Croft Junior School, Bishopton Primary School and Baginton Fields – which is a school for children in Special needs.

During my visits to these schools I interacted with the head teachers, the classroom teachers and teaching assistances on the similarities and dissimilarities in our educational practices. We shared views and ideas on projects based on ICT and other curriculum based subjects. I had also carried a few letters from the children of our Primary Section for the pupils of Sydenham Primary School. I was delighted and deeply touched by the way the children of year five who will be graduating soon to the High School, immediately responded to each of them. On my return from UK I am overwhelmed at the fulfilment of my mission. The exchange programmes we had been dreaming of are now in the pipeline. They will be a reality very soon as all the schools have shown a deep interest and have shared our vision. By the time the schools in UK return from their Term-break holidays we will have installed our video-conferencing facilities about which we have discussed over e-mail. We have already submitted our ISA dossier and now we are about to launch our Global School Project programme in our school and apply for the RV Grant from BCL in 2006. Mrs. Kusumika Chatterjee visited the school from 24th – 27th June ,2006 to plan the projects for different subjects and the Teacher Exchange Programme is likely to begin in December.

Between England and India there is now a good understanding and I am excited at the possibilities of a long term relationship that will create not only sharing but a lot of caring too.

 Dear Ms Keya Sinha

Congratulations for being successfully accredited with the International School Award. As mentioned earlier the award will be presented formally in a ceremony being planned for 11th October 2006, at Mumbai. In the meantime, please find attached the soft copy of the ISA logo (in bitmap & Word format) that you may start using for your school publications to highlight and publicise your achievement. Your accreditation, and therefore the use of the ISA logo are valid for a period of three years, 2006-2009.

Kindly note that the logo should be used as a kite mark on your school letter head and other publicity material as appropriate but should not be used as the letter head by itself since only the British Council can use it in that manner and that too only for selected correspondence pertaining to the ISA.

Best wishes

Mrigank
